Mathematics
Students will be working with the Everyday Mathematics program. Everyday Mathematics emphasizes the application of mathematics to real world situations. Numbers, skills and mathematical concepts are not presented in isolation, but are linked to situations and contexts that are relevant to everyday lives. Each lesson includes time for whole-group instruction as well as small group, partner, or individual activities. Throughout the curriculum students are encouraged to explain and discuss their mathematical thinking, in their own words.
Everyday Mathematics provides numerous methods for basic skills practice and review. Included are written & choral fact drills, mental math routines, practice with fact triangles (flash cards of fact families), daily sets of review problems (Math Boxes), homework (Home Links), timed tests (Fact Power), and a wide variety of math games.

writing
Students will use Empowering Writers. This is a proven, research-based METHODOLOGY that encourages each student to learn the skills of an author by connecting to good literature, participating in teacher modeled writing, and engaging in guided practice. Ultimately, through this process, your child will independently apply the skills learned in creating written pieces of their own.
This includes writing in each of the following genres: Narrative (written for the purpose of entertaining an audience of others), Expository (writing about a topic with the purpose of providing information), and Persuasive/Argumentative (writing around an issue for the purpose of persuading or convincing others).
